MLK Day: Citizenship and service in action

Has anyone ever given you a hand or mentored you or supported you? Have you ever considered paying it forward? Your opportunity to do just that is just around the corner.

Monday, Jan. 20, 2014 is the Martin Luther King Jr federal holiday. It always falls on the third Monday in January and is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service, used to make an impact on communities. This year’s theme is Citizenship and Service in Action.

Many Americans will honor Dr. King by helping their neighbors and communities at thousands of projects spread across all 50 states. During this time of re-commitment to the nation, citizens, nonprofits, the private sector and government can work together to meet critical needs and advance King’s dream of opportunity for all. Use this day of service as an opportunity to put the core American principles of citizenship and service into action. Service is a powerful force to bridge economic and social divides.

Projects will include delivering meals, refurbishing schools and community centers, collecting food and clothing, signing up mentors, supporting veterans and military families, promoting nonviolence, and more, with many projects starting on King Day and lasting throughout the year.

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) is the federal agency that leads the annual MLK Day of Service, working with the King Center in Atlanta and thousands of nonprofit groups, faith-based organizations, and schools and businesses nationwide.
