March Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Center closes soon

Rick Johnson
director, March VITA Center

The March Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Center will remain open for filing taxes until April 30, 2014. With the formal tax season now over, the March VITA Tax Center has prepared approximately 800 returns, saving nearly $100K in preparation fees, and clients have received back more than $850 thousand in combined state and federal refunds, said Lt. Col. Deric Prescott, active duty Staff Judge Advocate, March Air Reserve Base, Calif.

If you want to know the status of your refund, please visit http://www.irs.gov and select the “Refunds” tab and follow the three simple instructions.

If you need to file an amendment (1040X) or previous year’s returns, we will schedule those appointments after April 15th.
Extensions

If you are in the military stationed abroad or are in a combat zone during the tax filing season, you may qualify for certain automatic extensions related to the filing and paying of your federal income taxes. For example, military that are on duty outside of the United States and Puerto Rico on the due date of their income tax return are allowed an automatic two–month extension to file tax returns. Please note, this is an extension to file tax returns, not an extension of time to pay any tax owed by the regular due date of the return. In such situations, interest is charged on any taxes owed from April 15 to the date the taxes are paid. You can also request an additional four-month extension by filing Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Tax Return, by June 15. Be sure to check the ‘out of the country’ box on Line 8 of the form.

If you are serving in a combat zone or in a contingency operation, or are hospitalized as a result of an injury received while serving in such an area or operation, you qualify for extensions of deadlines. The deadlines for filing tax returns, paying taxes, filing claims for refund, and taking other actions with the IRS are extended to at least 180 days after you leave the designated combat zone or contingency operation. You are able to notify IRS directly of your request for combat zone relief for extensions of deadlines through a special e-mail address: combatzone@irs.gov.

“Remember to bring all necessary items to file your taxes,” said Effie White, March VITA senior tax preparer. “(This includes) all W-2s, 1099Rs, dividends, interest, identification EIN number and complete address for child care provider, all information for deductions you want to claim, bank account information for direct deposit, etcetera.”

Again, we are here to assist you in getting the most out of your tax return for FREE!! Please call us at 951-655-3659 to schedule an appointment. We hope to hear from you soon.
