“Come on down!” March Airman selected as contestant on The Price Is Right

The Price is Right game show models join service members assigned to March ARB for a group photograph on the stage at CBS Studios, Los Angeles in this 2009 file photo. The 452 FSS outdoor recreation office provides tours to view tapings of the popular show several times throughout the year.

A group of March ARB community members attended a taping of the Price is Right as part of a tour arranged by the 452 Force Support Squadron (FSS) outdoor recreation office, May 1.

During the taping, which will air on June 18, Lt. Col. Deric Prescott, 951st Reserve Support Squadron Staff Judge Advocate, was selected as a contestant on the long-running show, one of America’s most popular daytime television programs. It was an opportunity Prescott had been hoping for since childhood.

“Growing up, during summer vacation or days off from school my grandmother and I would always turn on the television to watch the Price Is Right,” said Prescott. “We’d cheer on the contestants, boo when the prices did not seem accurate and yodel along with the little climbing guy. I watch the show on the few federal holidays that I get off, but I had always thought it would be cool to attend the taping of the show, just to feel what it would be like to get close to being lucky.”

Prescott’s mother Patty, who attended the taping with him, stated that there’s a lot of standing and waiting, but tons of energy displayed by all. “You cannot just help but be excited,” she said. “The atmosphere is almost carnival like and after everyone is screened, you enter into the Bob Barker Theater and everything seems so surreal.”

Having her son called up as a contestant made the experience much more exciting for Patty.

“The chances of anyone being called up to the stage are slim, and everyone knows it, but we all have an equal shot,” she said. “I did not even hear it at first when the announcer said, ‘Deric Prescott, come on down, you’re the next contestant on the Price is Right!’ From that point forward it is still all a blur, it all happened so quickly.”

Contestants appearing on the Price is Right are required to sign a confidentiality agreement that prohibits them from revealing any details or the results of the show before the air date, but Patty feels that it will be worth tuning in to see the outcome.
“As a proud mom, I think my son represented March ARB and the Air Force well,” she stated. “You’ll just have to watch the show on June 18 to see how he did.”

FSS advertises the tour several times a year and it is one of the more popular trips offered on the base.

“Our folks are frequently very lucky when they attend the Price is Right,” said Outdoor Recreation Director, Cary Kerr. “I am excited to learn that our record remains strong,”
