The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) recently announced that 452d Aerospace Medicine Squadron (AMS) Clinical Nurse, Capt. Marlon Garzo Saria, secretary of the ONS Board of Directors, was selected by the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) for induction as a Fellow in the academy. Induction will take place during AAN’s annual meeting in October in Washington, DC. Selection for fellowship in the Academy is one of the most prestigious honors in the field of nursing.

“It is a wonderful feeling to be recognized for the work, but it is an even greater feeling to love the work you do and fully believe that the work is important,” said Saria. “Any award is not possible without the support of family, supervisors, colleagues, friends, and very specific to us nurses, our patients! They make this recognition even more meaningful.”

In addition to being a Traditional Reservist with the 452d AMS, Saria is an advanced practice nurse researcher in the Neuro-Oncology Laboratory of Santosh Kesari, MD, PhD, at the Moores Cancer Center, University of California, San Diego. He earned his bachelor of science in nursing degree from the University of the Philippines in Manila and his master of science in nursing degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He currently is working toward his PhD at UCLA.

The AAN serves the public and the nursing profession by advancing health policy and practice through the generation, synthesis, and dissemination of nursing knowledge. The Academy’s 2,200 fellows are nursing’s most accomplished leaders in education, management, practice, and research. They have been recognized for their extraordinary contributions to nursing and health care.

The Oncology Nursing Society is a professional association of more than 35,000 members committed to promoting excellence in oncology nursing and the transformation of cancer care. Since 1975, ONS has provided a professional community for oncology nurses, developed evidence-based education programs and treatment information, and advocated for patient care, all in an effort to improve quality of life and outcomes for patients with cancer and their families.
