In observance of the 2015 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute (DEOMI) proudly announces the availability of original artwork available for download from DEOMI’s website at www.deomi.org.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a United States federal holiday marking the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, around the time of King’s birthday, January 15. This year, the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service will be recognized on Jan. 19. King was the chief spokesman for nonviolent activism in the civil rights movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tenn.

President Clinton signed the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday and Service Act August 23, 1994, expanding the mission of the holiday as a day of community service, interracial cooperation and youth anti-violence initiatives.

According to Mr. Peter Hemmer, DEOMI Illustrator, DEOMI’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday poster focuses on the concept that this holiday is a day of service. The imagery is a cubicle wall populated by a portrait of Dr. King, photos of volunteer activities, and volunteer events written on a dry erase board. The national recurring theme of this holiday is “Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On…Not A Day Off.” It calls upon the American people to engage in public service and promote peaceful social change. Dr. King’s unfinished movement toward equality can be achieved by our united, enduring efforts. All DEOMI observance month poster files are in the public domain. National Blood Donor Month

January is National Blood Donor Month, and the Armed Services Blood Program (ASBP) is encouraging all service members to make a resolution to give blood regularly in 2015.  National Blood Donor Month recognizes the importance of giving blood and platelets while honoring those who roll up a sleeve to help patients in need.

“We couldn’t save lives without our donors,” says Army Lt. Col. Jason Corley, the program’s deputy director of operations. “As a program, we have saved thousands of lives this year and that happened because of our donor’s support. They are the ‘silent heroes.’”

Unpredictable winter weather can result in blood drive cancellations, and seasonal illnesses, like the flu, may cause some donors to be unable to make or keep blood donation appointments.

Individuals of all blood types are needed. With a shelf life of 42 days, red blood cells must be constantly replenished to maintain an adequate supply for patients. All blood collected by the ASBP directly supports ill or injured service members, retirees and their families worldwide – whenever and wherever they need it the most.

“For more than 40 years, National Blood Donor Month has given hope to those who may have otherwise faced very adverse health risks,” says Corley. “However, with advances in medical technology and research, people are now getting the blood they need and as a result, now experience a better quality of life.”

FEBRUARY YELLOW RIBBON EVENT

The Air Force Reserve Command Yellow Ribbon Program invites you to a Regional Yellow Ribbon Training event to be held in Orange County, California, Feb. 27-March 1. HAP ARNOLD CLUB ‘NAME THAT DISH’ CONTEST

The Hap Arnold Club is holding a “Name that Dish” contest. The entry forms can be found at the club with the current name of the dish on each slip. All dishes are available at the Back Street Café in case you want to try them before giving them a name. Ballot boxes are located by the entry slips at the Back Street Café and at the Club cashier’s cage. Each consecutive contest will begin on the 11th of the month and close on the 10th of the following month. Winners will receive four tickets to the Aces Comedy Club (a $60 value!), so be sure to include your name and number on your entries. Good luck!

FY15 UTA RESCHEDULE GUIDELINES

Col. Muncy has determined that the following FY 15 Unit Training Assemblies may only be rescheduled if the reschedule date is for the alternate UTA during the same month of the A and B UTAs for the months of February, May and August 2015. The wing commander will authorize reschedules outside of the same month, if absolutely necessary, on a case-by-case basis.

TAP VIRTUAL CURRICULUM POLICY

Implementation of the Veterans Opportunity to Work (VOW) Act of 2011, under H.R. 2433, and the Veterans Employment Initiative (VEI) under Executive Order 13518, has driven a host of new requirements for transitioning personnel. The VOW Act made service-member participation in the re-designed TAP program mandatory as of Nov. 21, 2012. This re-designed program expands counseling and guidance for active and Reserve members separating from the military after serving at least 180 days on active duty. Reservists going on or coming off of 180 consecutive days of orders due to school, BMT, deployments, TDY’s, etc. are required to comply with the following requirements:  pre-separation counseling at the A&FRC, VA Benefits briefing (parts I and II), CAPSTONE (DD Form 2958) and five-day TAP workshop. 

The VA Benefits brief can be completed in person at March ARB or online, You can attend the five-day TAP workshop at any active duty installation, or online (it takes four days and includes the VA Benefits briefing). March Airmen participate in 83rd Hollywood Christmas Parade

Approximately 27 Airmen from March Air Reserve Base, Edwards Air Force Base and Los Angeles Air Force Base participated in the 83rd Annual Hollywood Christmas Parade on November 30.

The Hollywood Christmas Parade is an annual event in the city of Los Angeles that attracts attendance of nearly one million people. The 3.5 mile parade route includes performances by marching bands from around the U.S., giant balloon characters, equestrian units and more.

This year marked the 13th year the Air Force Sergeant’s Mini Jet Team featured its battery-powered mini aircraft down the red carpet parade route. March Airmen, who piloted some of the five mini F-16 aircraft, also carried with them local children with disabilities or illnesses as part of a community volunteer project from the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.

The Air Force Sergeant’s Mini Jet Team is a group of active duty, Reserve and retired Airmen who volunteer annually to take the battery-powered mini jets to events for children with disabilities and illnesses, said retired Master Sgt. Peter Gutierrez, a 33-year veteran Air Force veteran and founder of the team.

“Every year for the Hollywood Christmas Parade we work with Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles to provide us children that are outpatients undergoing radiation and chemo treatments,” added Gutierrez. “Some children have cancer or other illnesses or disabilities that CHLA treats.”

“These events are very fun to do even though we’re spending time away from home,” said Staff Sgt. Jonathan R. Villa Vargas, supply technician, 452nd Logistics Readiness Squadron, Blue Eagles Total Force Honor Guard, March ARB.  “You get a good feeling doing this.”

Despite it raining on parade day, Airmen braved the weather to volunteer for more than eight hours. They pre-positioned five mini F-22 Raptor, a mini P-51 Mustang and a giant balloon character nearly 70 feet tall into place for marching down the red carpet.

“More service members should come out to these types of events so the public can see our faces,” said first-year parade volunteer Staff Sgt. Zakai A. Webster, services technician, 163rd Reconnaissance Wing, California Air National Guard, March ARB.

“We do anywhere from 14 to 26 events a year,” said Gutierrez. “One of our events, [Expo Village] for the Tournament of Roses committee, lasts four and a half days.”

Most of the volunteer opportunities to assist the mini jet team are through the Blue Eagles Total Force Honor Guard, explained Staff Sgt. Brandyn J. Lopez, services technician, 452nd Force Support Squadron, Blue Eagles Total Force Honor Guard, March ARB.

“The Honor Guard gives me the opportunity to do [this] because they give us so many different color events,” added Webster, who helped carry the team’s banner down the red carpet.

“This is my second parade and I had fun last year,” said Lopez as he explained his safety duties for the event for the parade. “Everyone has been accommodating.”

“I’ll never be able to repay the countless selfless people and companies that help keep this program going,” said Gutierrez when referring to all of the volunteer help. “They help us because they know we are not supported with any budget, and they have seen the smiles and heard the laughter of the children; we have made a difference in their lives.”
