Although a bit of a ways out of town, Castle Dome is definitely worth the drive. The displays of the artifacts were very well done and the nicely written placards telling the specific history of the buildings, people and area were very educational.
Don’t forget to walk through the mining area after going through the buildings. It took about three to four hours to take it all in. You will want to take food with you if you want more than snacks and definitely a water source.
Castle Dome was loaded with obscure memorabilia. It was a neat driving experience around the area too. The neighborhood people were nice, it was inexpensive and just an utterly offbeat adventure.
Aside from the historical aspect of it the hikes were amazing.
Castle Dome Peak is an off trail trek in the Kofa Wildlife Refuge north and slightly east of Yuma. It’s not a technical peak but you had better have good route finding skills, endurance for endless bouldering and bushwhacking, and there is some exposure on the route.
It is one of the best low elevation desert scrambles around. The views from the top are outstanding! The color and contour of the Castle Domes is out of this world and the harsh surrounding ranges and desert are awesome.
For those who like to be outdoors and have some fun in the sun, this place the where it’s at.
