Sophia Cole proudly holds a check for $1,500 during a scholarship awards ceremony on June 8 at the MCAS Yuma Commissary. She is joined, from left to right by Lucia Bjornstad, Store Manager, Maria Cole, Maj. Robert Kuckuk, MCAS Yuma commanding officer. Each year, the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) awards thousands of dollars in scholarships for military children to support their educational needs.  This year marks the 12th anniversary of this scholarship program in which DeCA has awarded more than $10 million to 6,742 military children around the world. Sophia Cole graduated from Gilla Ridge High School in June and has been accepted at her mother and father’s alma mater, the University of Colorado at Boulder.
