Chaplain’s Corner: “Happiness”

Lt. Daniel Chung
MAG-13 Assistant Chaplain

Being in the military, there are times when we are separated from our families and loved ones.

With the advent of technology, we can bridge the physical gap through Skype, Face Time, email, etc. Unfortunately, being separated from our loved ones does not make us immune to conflicts.

In fact, problems in our relationships may even escalate due to the temporary separation.

Add to that the daily stress of your work and that particular Marine or Sailor in your unit that you don’t get along with.

With what may seem like a season of relational heartaches, what can you do?

One thing that can help us in all our valuable relationships is to put the happiness of the other ahead of our own. But what do you get out of that?

One author writes, “The answer is – happiness. That is what you get, but a happiness through serving others instead of using them, a happiness that won’t be bad for you. It is the joy that comes from giving joy, from loving another person in a costly way.”

Think about that in your current relationships with your spouse, family, friends, and fellow service members.

When we take a blow to our pride and not retaliate, that’s costly to us.

Absorb the loss; it won’t kill you, and as you invest in positive ways, your dividends will bring you true happiness.
