What is Christmas to you? For me it is my favorite time of the year! As a Christian, I do celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. The greatest gift the world has ever or will ever receive. But, not everyone believes as I do. So, what does Christmas mean to you? Too me, I love riding around and looking at all the decorations. Houses lit up, Christmas trees peering out from behind open shutters, the long lines to see Santa Claus in department stores. The smiling faces of the children that have waited 12 long months for this day, the day they could give their wish list to Santa. I think of the memories I have as a child and waiting, anticipating, listening and hoping I could hear a shuffling in my parent’s bedroom. Hurry up! I want to see what I got for Christmas. Did I get that new bike I so desperately want? Hurry up! I want to ride. I want to show off all that chrome to my friends
I remember my grandmother cooking away in her tiny kitchen and smiling and saying to me, “old Tom is almost ready to take out of the oven.” I can still smell that turkey, country ham and homemade pumpkin pie and I can once again relate to Pavlov’s dog! Moving ahead a few years I remember the excitement of my two daughter’s on Christmas Day. It was like someone dropped the green flag to start the Daytona 500! They charged the tree with a vengeance and all you could see was blond hair, strips of wrapping paper and shards of plastic thrown into the air. My, always under control, wife in the kitchen fixing our traditional pancake breakfast. Then thinking once again, there is something wrong with this picture. My wife and I spent a lot of time and money searching for the right dolls, the right Barbie House, the right gifts and they are playing with the boxes while Barbie is thrown over in the corner!
Yes, Christmas means different things to different people but I hope all of us can associate Christmas with something good.
“Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased” (Luke 2:14).
