Support of USMC Tax Centers

MarAdmin 673/12

Marine Corps legal assistance offices provide seasonal annual income tax preparation and electronic filing services to eligible personnel as part of an income tax assistance program.  This annual program has repeatedly proven to be a major quality of life benefit for our Marine Corps community. Last year alone, Marine Corps tax centers prepared and filed more than 64,400 federal and state returns, saving service members, retirees, and their families over 8.3 million dollars in tax preparation and filing fees.

The LSSS officer-in-charge is responsible to his regional MCI commanding general for the provision of legal services support within each respective legal services support area (LSSA). Tax preparation and electronic filing services is a legal services support capability within the legal assistance functional area.  Tax services should be distributed throughout each LSSA to the maximum extent practical to facilitate ease of access for eligible recipients.

The continued success of this program requires advance planning and active command support.  The tax program’s perennial success has largely been due to the support provided by commanders in making Marines, facilities, and information technology assets available.

Command POCS should coordinate with their cognizant legal services support team (LSST) officer-in-charge.

Authorized by Maj. Gen. V. A. Ary, Staff Judge Advocate to the Commandant of the Marine Corps.
