NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev.— The Airman and Family Readiness Center is hosting a course for new, expecting and seasoned parents entitled Common Sense Parenting.

The course is a practical skill-based parenting program that can be applied to every family.

The classes take place every quarter and are broken down into four sessions: Apr. 13, 20, 27 and May 4. All classes take place between 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

The Airman and Family Readiness Center staff said the course’s logical strategies and easy-to-learn techniques address issues of communication, discipline, decision making, relationships, self-control and school success.

Common sense parenting lessons include problem behaviors, satisfaction improvement and relationship building.

“Parents are taught to communicate effectively, avoid power struggles, give positive attention, control their emotions, balance discipline with affection and praise their child’s good behavior,” said Mechelle Randolph, Airman and Family Readiness Center community readiness consultant.

Classes are separated into age groups to give a better understanding, since some information may vary for younger children.

The course is open to all who wish to attend, but is geared toward parents with children from five to 11 years old.

“We’re all human, we’re going to make mistakes,” Randolph said. “Sometimes you can’t follow the text book that says, ‘you have to do it this way.’ You’ve got to use some common sense.”

To register for Common Sense Parenting classes, contact the Airman and Family Readiness Center at 652-3327.
