Col. Barry Cornish will take command of the 99th Air Base Wing at Nellis.
NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. — Col. Barry R. Cornish will take command and responsibilities of the 99th Air Base Wing from Brig. Gen. (select) Steven D. Garland during a 9 a.m. change of command ceremony, today, at Nellis.
The commander of the 99th Air Base Wing is the installation commander for Nellis Air Force Base, Creech Air Force Base and the 2.9 million-acre Nevada Test and Training Range and is responsible for three groups and 14 squadrons providing installation support for operational testing, tactics development and advanced training in air, space and cyberspace as well as global remotely piloted aircraft operations. The commander also provides medical, contracting, engineering, supply, logistics, medical, communications, law enforcement, environmental, security, and transportation for more than 12,000 assigned personnel and 313,000 dependents, retirees and veterans. In addition, the Wing supports the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center, 53d Wing, 57th Wing, 432d Wing, 505th Command & Control Wing, the NTTR, more than 250 rotary and fixed-wing aircraft plus nearly 1,500 visitors and temporary-duty personnel conducting business daily across the installation.
Cornish is a distinguished graduate of the University of North Texas Reserve Officer Training Corps program. He earned his wings at the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training Program at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, in 1991. Cornish is a command pilot with more than 2,200 flying hours, and is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Weapons School. He has served as an instructor pilot, weapons officer, operational test pilot and operations officer. Cornish commanded the 67th Fighter Squadron, Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan. His staff assignments include duty as Chief, Avionics Requirements Branch, F-22 System Management Office, Air Combat Command Directorate of Requirements, Langley Air Force Base, Va.; Executive Officer to the Commander, Allied Air Command, Izmir, Turkey; and Chief of Staff, Joint Forces Special Operations Component Command, Camp Liberty, Iraq.
Garland will be assuming command of the 36th Wing, Anderson Air Force Base, Guam. He graduated from the University of California, Irvine in 1986 and received his commission from the U.S. Air Force Officer Training School in 1987. He has served as an instructor in the F-4G, F-117A and F-15E with numerous operational tours in the Middle East and Europe. He commanded the 379th Expeditionary Operations Support Squadron and was Vice Commander 505th Command & Control Wing. He has held staff assignments at Headquarters Air Staff as well as the Air, Land, Sea, Application Center. He is a master navigator with more than 3,000 hours, including 1,100 combat flying hours in the F-15E and F-4G.
