Ask the Doc – June 29, 2012

Q: I’m 45 year old female. Do I need to get a mammogram?

A: Yes, it’s recommended for ages 40 through 69 every 12-24 months.

Q: Do I need to see my Primary Care Manager and get a referral? How do I schedule this appointment?

A: If you’re a healthy person, call the appointment line at 653-2273 and ask them to instruct your PCM to order your screening exam. If you are at the hospital you may self-refer for a screening mammogram by stopping the Radiology Department. They ask specific questions to see if you meet the criteria. The Mammography technician will call you in 2-3 days to schedule your appointment. If you don’t meet the criteria, you’ll need to see your PCM first. If you’re not sure about your health status, then schedule an appointment with your PCM by calling 653-2273.
