Payton, who set up The Gary Payton Foundation in 1996 to provide safe places for underprivileged youth to participate recreational activities, enjoys giving back to the military and there families.

Children from the Nellis Community participate in a basketball clinic sponsored by the NBA in the Nellis Warrior Fitness Center. More than 75 children ages 6-15 participated in the clinic taught by NBA/WNBA players Lenny Wilkins, Gary Payton, Jerome Williams, Chris Muillin, Spencer Haywood and Teresa Edwards.
