U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Keeshond White, 99th Logistic Readiness Squadron vehicle maintenance apprentice, donates blood July 20, 2012. White was one of 94 donors to donate 132 units over a two day period.

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. — The 57th Wing and United Blood Services hosted a blood drive July 19 and 20 at the outdoor recreation center here at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev.

The goal for each day was 33 donors and 49 units of blood. That goal was shattered by 47 donors each day and a total of 132 units of blood being donated.

One hundred and five individuals signed in with 11 being deferred. Many deferrals come from deployments. Anyone deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan is deferred for one year upon returning home.

The 57th Wing collected more blood in two days than any blood drive in the history of Nellis AFB, thanks to the efforts of blood drive coordinator Staff Sgt. Samantha Geiger, said Julie Lindsey, United Blood Services Senior Donor Recruiter.

The blood donated provides blood and blood products to the Mike O’Callaghan Federal Medical Center, which helps active-duty service members and their families, as well as veterans during medical procedures that require blood or blood products.
