National POW/MIA Recognition Day

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. — A 2012 National POW/MIA Recognition Day ceremony is scheduled to take place Sept. 21, 2012, at 9:30 a.m. at Freedom Park on Nellis AFB.

The guest speaker will be Col. Barry Cornish, 99th Air Base Wing commander.

The National POW/MIA Recognition Day is a day of observance for all Americans to pause in remembrance of the sacrifices and service of those who were Prisoners of War as well as those who are Missing in Action.

The 2012 national theme, “Until They Are Home,” especially recognizes family members of POW/MIAs, many of whom continue to wait for the return of their loved ones.

This day is traditionally observed on the third Friday in September and is one of six days that Congress has mandated the flying of the National League of Families’ POW/MIA flag. The other days are: Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day.

Anyone authorized to access the base is invited to attend the ceremony and the post-reception, which will take place at The Club immediately following the ceremony. Military personnel attending the ceremony should wear the uniform of the day.

Nellis AFB has observed POW/MIA Recognition Day with a remembrance ceremony since 1986.
