Courtesy Photo Oktoberfest is a 16-day festival held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, running from late September to the first weekend in October. It is one of the most famous events in Germany and is the world’s largest fair, with more than 5 million people attending every year. To the locals, it is not called Oktoberfest, but “die Wiesn” - after the colloquial name of the fairgrounds themselves. The Oktoberfest is an important part of Bavarian culture, having been held since 1810. Other cities across the world also hold Oktoberfest celebrations, modeled after the original Munich event. The Munich Oktoberfest originally took place during the sixteen days up to, and including, the first Sunday in October.

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. — The 57th Operations Group will host an Oktoberfest celebration at The Club at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 28 to promote base-wide unity.

There will be live music and German food and drinks at the event, and all Department of Defense ID card holders are welcome to attend.

“Oktoberfest brings people together of all different nationalities,” said Capt. Elizabeth Vaccaro, 57th Operations Support Squadron Airfield Operations Flight commander. “The hope is that this base-wide event will mimic that same spirit.”

This event is also the operations group’s way of celebrating a successful fiscal year 2012.

“Everyone (here) has contributed to the rigorous pace Nellis maintains in some way or another; from finance Airmen to maintenance (Airmen) and everyone in between. The mission wouldn’t be accomplished without 100 percent commitment from (everyone),” the captain said.

“This is a great chance for members of all different wings and (Air Force Specialty Codes) to get together,” she added.

Oktoberfest is the oldest and largest fair held annually primarily in Munich, Germany, from the last week in September until Oct. 3, which is German Unity day.

The Oktoberfest tradition started in 1810 as a celebration for the marriage of Bavarian crown prince Ludwig to the Saxon-Hidburghausen princess Therese.
