Using the power of your vote . . .

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. — No one has to miss out on getting their vote in for the upcoming general election. With FVAP.gov voting for military members, it is simpler than ever.

The 2012 general election will be held Nov. 6 and deadlines to register absentee ballots are state-dependent and can be found at the FVAP.gov website.

An absentee ballot is a way for military members and their families to vote while outside their state of residence.

To request your absentee ballot, use the online registration and absentee ballot assistant or contact your unit or installation voting assistance officers.

“Today, with the internet, it is easy to vote,” Capt. Ashley Snyder, 99th Medical Support Squadron Resource Management Office deputy flight commander. “The website makes things error proof.”

The Military Postal Service Agency provides free expedited ballot delivery and ballot tracking to local election offices for military members and their families stationed overseas. Overseas and deployed members can go to their local post office or postal clerk, use the Label 11 – DOD form on their absentee ballot envelope and mail it. To track the status of the ballot, go to www.usps.com.

Individuals, whom haven’t received their ballot by Oct. 6, should use the Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot, or FWAB as their back-up ballot. To use the FWAB go to FVAP.gov and use the automated assistant. For each voting office, write in either a candidate’s name or their party designation.

“Don’t leave voting to the last minute,” Snyder said. “The election is creeping up quickly.”

For information on the Federal Voting Assistance Program or help with the absentee voting process, contact FVAP at vote@fvap.gov or call 1-800-438-8683 or 312-425-1584.

Ten seconds later, that picture still exists

RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany — There is a conversation many teenagers have had with their parents or friends, me included. “Hey, don’t worry! That’s how Snapchat works.” While many teenagers only share their silly, cross-eyed, quadruple-chinned faces with friends, there are a...

Becoming stronger through failure

ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. — Failing the Air Force physical training test was my greatest fear since joining the military. It is embarrassing to admit recently that fear came to fruition, but what I have learned through that failure has become one of my greatest strengths. After failing, I definitely felt like a weak...

RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany — I remember the day like it was yesterday. My heartbeat echoed in my head as I attempted to dry my sweaty hands on my jeans. I was 21 years old, sitting in a Korean court room, waiting to be questioned by prosecutors. How I ended up there was unreal. Just...

Everyone has a story to tell

TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. —  We tend to believe that just because we haven’t won a Nobel Prize or survived a horrific event that our stories are not worth telling.  This notion is false; your story is worth telling. We often get caught up on other peoples’ stories, whether it is that of a famous...
