Promoting better lifestyle choices: HAWC offers amazing abs class

The Amazing Abs class is one of multiple classes, which promotes better lifestyle choices by offering simpler healthy alternatives.

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. — (Editors note: This is the third story in a four story series on the HAWC)

 

The Health and Wellness Center here is promoting healthier lifestyle choices for Airmen and their families by offering a variety of classes and services, and one way the staff is doing this is by offering an Amazing Abs class.

The Amazing Abs class offers participants a light to high intensity core group workout with an instructor.

The class is offered every Monday and Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at the HAWC

“We are always welcoming new people, but we do have many regulars,” said Brittney Hunsaker, 99th Medical Operations Squadron HAWC health and fitness specialist. “It just depends on people’s schedules because it is a hard time for a lot of people to get out early to get into the class.”

The 30-minute class varies workout routines from week to week to offer participants a variety of exercise choices, and to keep the class entertaining.

“The class is obviously designed to build core strength, which will in turn help a lot of the Airmen out with that portion of their fitness test,” Hunsaker said. “The class is designed to be a high intensity abdominal workout; however, each participant is only going to get out of the class what [he or she] puts into it.”

Those participants who might be suffering from an injury or haven’t worked out in a while don’t have to worry the class might be too hard for them.

“I give some modification to where if [some participants are] not as strong [as everyone else]that they can do [the exercises] without feeling bad or not participating because they can’t do some of the moves due to injury or what have you. There’s always ways to modify everything, and I always make sure that I’m giving modifications so that everybody feels included,” Hunsaker said.

The class is scheduled right before a spin class so participants can move from core training to a cardiovascular workout if they so choose.

“It’s nice to go from abs to spin and get that cardiovascular endurance as well,” Hunsaker said.

The class is free for all Department of Defense card holders.
