Community Happenings – October 12, 2012

Nazarae Baldonado, 2, throws a bean bag as part of a game as her father, Airman 1st Class Jarrad Baldonado, 99th Logistics Readiness Squadron materiel management apprentice, watches during the Fall Festival Oct. 5, 2012, at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. Military service members and their families were able to participate in face painting, sumo wrestling, a pinata, dart games, and other family activities during the Fall Festival.

Chuck Yeager will visit Nellis Sunday: Retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Charles E. Yeager will break the sound barrier 65 years after the first historic event Oct. 14 near Edwards AFB, Calif. The flight will be followed by a 15 minute interview period. Flying on an F-15 Eagle belonging to the 65th Aggressor Squadron, Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., Yeager is expected to break the sound barrier at the same time his experimental Bell X-1 made the feat in 1947: at 10:24 a.m. Yeager will also speak to the Airmen at Nellis AFB Sunday, at 3 p.m. at the Thunderbirds hangar. Airmen are encouraged to meet Chuck Yeager, but they must RSVP per an e-mail sent base-wide, Oct. 10 to all personnel. For questions or queries on this visit, call the 99 ABW/PA at 652-2750.

Gate Changes: On Oct. 1, Nellis AFB lost contract gate guards services due to expiration of the federal law that permitted this arrangement after 9/11. As a result, the 99th Security Forces Squadron will experience a significant manpower shortfall over the next several months which will drive a reduction in some services and base entry points. Effective Oct. 1, the Range Road gate will no longer conduct commercial vehicle searches or issue base passes. All commercial traffic will be rerouted to the Area II commercial gate for inspection and all visitors will be processed at the Main Gate Visitor Center 24/7. In addition, on Oct. 6 the Hollywood and VA gates will close until further notice. Traffic that would normally use the Hollywood gate can use the Tyndall, Main, or Area II gates, while traffic for the Mike O’Callaghan Federal Medical Center should use the Range Road gate. Any questions can be addressed to the 99th Security Forces Squadron Base Defense Operations Center at (702) 652-2311.

Fifth Annual Fire Muster: The fifth Annual Fire Muster will take place at the sports pavillion Oct. 12 from 6:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is firefighter operations competition with a twist. Come out and support your unit teams and fellow Airmen. For more information call the Fire Prevention Section at (702) 652-9630, (702) 652-9622 or (702) 652-9626 or email Irvin Ridgeway at Irvin.Ridgeway@Nellis.Af.Mil or Scott Edgmon at Scott.Edgmon@Nellis.Af.Mil.

U.S. Air Force Band of the Golden West: The USAF Band of the Golden West will perform a free concert at the Las Vegas Academy Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. tonight. The concert is free but tickets are required for entry. Tickets can be picked up at the teller line at Wells Fargo, 530 South Las Vegas Blvd., Las Vegas, Nev. and Wells Fargo, 112 Water St., Henderson, Nev. or send a self-addressed stamped envelope with number of tickets to: CCSD Secretary of Fine Arts, 3950 South Pecos-McLeod St., Las Vegas, Nev. 89121.
