Reserve Airmen foster volunteerism at ‘The Farm’

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. — Airmen from the 926th Group volunteered their time Oct. 3 to help a staple of the community—known as ‘The Farm’.

The reservists spent an evening at The Farm (located at 7222 West Grand Teton Drive here in Las Vegas) cleaning cow stalls, brushing horses, feeding tortoises and providing a hand at many other duties to prepare for the annual Fall Harvest Festival.

“I discovered The Farm in 2008 when I stopped to buy eggs,” said Master Sgt. Lisa Lee, 926th GP law office superintendent. “I noticed a volunteer sign up form and I’ve been coming here regularly ever since.”

The Farm, operating in Las Vegas for 50 years, holds a farmer’s market every weekend with fresh eggs, jams, honey, breads and other treats. And in October, children and adults alike can enjoy concessions, hay rides, a hay maze, face painting, a pumpkin patch, and a petting zoo during the festival.

Proceeds collected go toward facility upkeep and animal care. Guests can see rescued goats, rabbits, peacocks, pigs and a llama, during their visit.

“When Lisa came we were overcome with gratitude for all of the people she brought,” said owner Sharon Linsenbardt. “We can’t afford a staff, so we depend on volunteers. Without the base we can’t do what we do here, we simply can’t.”

In addition to year-round manpower, The Farm is always in need of animal food, egg cartons, blankets, cages, newspaper for bedding, and water dishes.

“I never knew this place existed,” said Maj. Misty Sorensen, 926th GP process manager. “This was such a great opportunity for us as coworkers to get together outside of duty hours and share in the experience of giving back to our local community.”
