Be proactive before MilPDS downtime

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. — Thinking of returning to the “real world” of civilian life or still loving the Air Force enough to give some more years? Make sure your paperwork has been updated in the Military Personnel Data System by Feb. 15 or you could be in for a big headache.

Nellis’ Military Personnel Section announced at a town hall meeting Jan. 17 that the MilPDS will be down from March 4 to March 27 for data security upgrades.

The people that work at the MPS are requesting that anyone with reenlistment or separation dates during that time have all their transactions submitted by Feb. 15 in order to make sure their paperwork is not late.

According to Senior Master Sgt. Lamicia Bailey, 99th FSS Military Personnel Section superintendent, being proactive is the key to preparing for the upgrade.

“I recommend people plan ahead. It’s their careers, their reenlistments, and their retirements, so everyone needs to make sure they are proactive with their own careers,” she said.

Basic pay and entitlements will not be affected by the upgrade and for those who are promoted during this time, your pay will be retroactive to your date of promotion after the system is back online.

Bailey recommends Airmen go into their online record now and save it electronically so they can have it during and after the upgrade. There is also the possibility the system could still be down past March 27, so having these copies and planning accordingly will prevent a lot of headaches.

Besides those who have been notified they have a date of separation in March, other applications and transactions also have critical deadlines.

Critical deadlines that must be met before the system goes down are as follows:

  • Jan. 31: Scheduling Oral Proficiency Interview test for Foreign Language Proficiency Bonus
  • Feb. 1: Completing a Base of Preference application and completing an in-place base of preference application
  • Feb. 15: Applying for reenlistment/extension or separation, voluntary retraining, scheduling a DLPT test for Foreign Language Proficiency Bonus, or updating SGLI.

“[Air Force Personnel Center] sends those dates down because there are a lot of transactions that will happen prior to those dates, and we don’t want to wait until March 1,” Bailey said.

Patience is also requested from Airmen at Nellis. Hundreds of transactions are submitted on a daily basis during normal operations. Because of the high volume of transactions anticipated after the upgrade is completed, the Military Personnel Section asks that you give them 10 business days to approve them.
