NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. — The Airman’s Attic has many household items and furniture available for active-duty members free of charge. Active-duty members are able to receive nine small items, such as kitchenware, and one big item, such as furniture, a month.
Airman’s Attic is a volunteer organization operated by the airman and family readiness center and staffed solely by volunteers.
“It’s a great place for Airmen to be able to not spend their whole pay check to get furniture and housing utensils,” said Airman 1st Class Anthony Lievanos, 99th Civil Engineer Squadron structures apprentice.
The Attic accepts donations of household items, furniture, baby clothes up to 2T, and military uniforms. It cannot accept other clothes, toys, books, ect.
Anyone with access to the base can volunteer to work at the Airman’s Attic, and many active-duty military and retired servicemembers volunteer. Sandy Valdezate, a retired senior master sergeant, volunteers as team lead on Saturdays. She also volunteers Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays receiving items for the Airman’s Attic from the loading dock.
Valdezate volunteers to make sure that there is a place for young Airmen and their families on a budget to get things for their house.
“I’m here to help the community,” Valdezate said.
Active-duty E-4s and below and their family members are eligible to use the Airman’s Attic. All other enlisted members and officers are eligible to get uniforms there.
The Airman’s Attic is located next to the commissary and behind the thrift shop. The hours of operation are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
