New roundabout coming to Beale gate

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. — If you like coming on to Nellis Air Force Base through the Beale gate, just down Las Vegas Boulevard from the main gate, get ready for construction and the detours that come with it.

The 99th Civil Engineer Squadron will be taking down the stop signs just through the gate and putting in a roundabout starting Feb. 11. This is the next big step since construction started in December 2012.

According to an email announcement sent by CES, this project will improve both traffic flow and safety at the gate.

Roundabouts are used to improve traffic flow while reducing fuel consumption, air pollution, and accidents. This project also improves force protection and safety.

According to Senior Master Sgt. Eric Bodden, 99th CES heavy repair superintendent, by yielding at a roundabout, “emissions are reduced through less stop and go than the current four-way stop.”

This summer the Beale gate and some adjacent roads will close for four weeks in order to complete the final stages of the roundabout project. This closure will be announced prior to the road closures.

Bodden would like to remind the community to plan for more travel time during their commute.

For the detour, those entering Beale gate will need to turn left, then an immediate right onto Depot Rd. Turn right on Devlin Dr and continue to the other side of the roundabout by the 99th Air Base Wing. You will reach Fitzgerald blvd, which will take you to main gate and the rest of base.

For more information regarding the roundabout, call Senior Master Sgt. Bodden 404-2731 or 2nd Lt Shane Veitenheimer at 652-3049.
