The Health and Wellness Center can help people achieve fitness and health goals by offering commissary tours. NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. — With a new year, comes New Year’s resolutions and goals.

A lot of Airmen set out to change bad habits by making healthy choices and lifestyle changes to help them create healthier habits.

The health and wellness center can help put Airmen on the right track to achieve their goals by offering commissary tours. These tours are set up to assist Airmen and their families shop for healthier food choices while saving money.

“A lot of people don’t think that eating healthy is synonymous with saving money, but it really can be,” said Lacy Puttuck, HAWC nutrition program manager and commissary tour guide. “There are better [food] options that are less expensive.”

It can be a difficult task trying to eat healthy without knowing what is really being put into one’s body.

“We aim to educate people about what’s in the store,” Puttuck said. “People get caught up with the flashy packaging of a product rather than the ingredients label to see what’s in it.”

Along with touring the commissary, Airmen receive a guidebook that includes tips to save money, a label reading guide and a list of products the commissary sells by aisle.

“This program is created to support the home environment by helping Airmen start and maintain a healthy lifestyle while saving money,” Puttuck said.

The tour is held the second Wednesday of every month and lasts about 45 minutes. The next tour is March 13 at 2 p.m.

According to Commissaries.com, commissaries contribute to family readiness and enhance the quality of life for America’s military and their families by providing groceries in a safe and secure shopping environment.
