AMU keeps Thunderbolts in sky

An A-10 Thunderbolt II crew chief operates an external ladder release to allow a pilot to climb down from the aircraft May 9 at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. Lowering the ladder is just one of many steps taken by a crew chief following a flight before discussing possible maintenance concerns with the pilot.

Airman 1st Class Adrian Sandoval, 757th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, assistant dedicated crew chief, attaches a refueling hose to an A-10 Thunderbolt II after a sortie May 9 at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. Part of Sandoval’s duties as an ADCC includes ensuring the aircraft is properly serviced and assisting refueling operations prior to its next sortie.

Staff Sgt. Joshua Drought, 757th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron A-10 Thunderbolt II crew chief, services the struts of an A-10 Thunderbolt II May 9 at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. The A-10 began service with the Air Force in 1975 and has remained effective in air to ground combat operations through constant maintenance and continued technological upgrades.

A post-flight inspection is performed after every sortie to inspect the aircraft for any damage and to correct any discrepancies that are found.

Tech Sgt. Thomas Puckett, 757th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron flightline expediter, pushes a towbar up to the landing gear of an A-10 Thunderbolt II May 9 at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. The towbar was used to attach the aircraft to ground equipment which then transported the aircraft back to the Thunder aircraft maintenance unit from base operations.
