Community Happenings – June 28, 2012

57th Maintenance Group Change of Command: The 57th MXG change of command ceremony will be July 2, at 8 a.m. in the Flanker Hangar, Bldg. 244.

57th Operations Group Change of Command: The 57th OG change of command ceremony will be July 3, at 9 a.m. in the Flanker Hangar, Bldg. 244.

Freedom Fest 2013: Freedom Fest is July 3, at the Sports Pavillion Field (across from lodging).

5 p.m. – After Party at The Club (18 and older)

4th annual Enlisted Combat Dining-in: Save the date! The 4th annual Enlisted Combat Dining-In will be held  Sept. 6 at Freedom Park. Come take part in the festivities, tickets will be available for pre-sale mid-July through September. E1-E4 – $5; E5-E6 – $10; E7-E9 – $15.

Deployed Spouses supporting Deployed Spouses: Stay strong during deployments and meet with other deployed spouses. Share ideas, learn coping skills, socialize and more. Meetings are held at the Airman and Family Readiness Center from 11 a.m. to noon the first and third Monday of each month. For more information, call (702) 652-3327.

EFMP Parent Support Group: Share common experiences unique to special needs families and learn about new information and resources. We meet the third Wednesday of every month at the Airman and Family Readiness Center.

June 28: Strongest on Nellis Power Lifting Competition: We want to see who’s the strongest here at Nellis AFB. If you think it is you, PROVE IT! Join the competition at the Warrior Fitness Center at 9 a.m.

July 2: Resume Tips and Job Search class: Held at the Airman & Family Readiness Center from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Get the latest trends on resume styles; learn interviewing techniques and how to network. To register, call (702) 652-3327.

July 3: Moving Up and Out of the Dorms: Determine what you have and what you need to set up housekeeping, and figure what it will actually cost you to live off-base besides rent and utilities. Project a budget for living off base and learn how to start your BAH. Start at 10 a.m. at the A&FRC.

July 3: Independence Day Meal: Crosswinds Dining Facility will be serving an Independence Day meal starting at 11 a.m.

July 3: Freedom Fest Base Wide Independence Day Celebration: From noon to 5 p.m. join us in a base wide Independence Day celebration at the Sports Pavilion across from lodging. There will be food, live entertainment, a kids’ zone and more; great fun for the entire family.

July 3: Freedom Fest After Party: After the party is the AFTER PARTY! A Live DJ, Celebrity Bartenders, Free Snacks Steak Night and more; continue the celebration at Robin’s Roost inside The Club. Party will start at 5 p.m.

July 4: 2013 Firecracker Open: How about some golf on July the Fourth? Sunrise Vista’s Firecracker Open will be in Flighted Individual Play format. Start time is 7:30 a.m. (Shot-Gun). Entry fee is $45 for members and $55 for nonmembers. Price includes green fees, food and range. For more information, call (702) 652-4497.

July 9: Understand the Thrift Savings Plan: From 9 a.m. to noon at the Airman & Family Readiness Center come learn the fund types and how they work, understand where your investments are and risk associated. We will discuss allocating your investments and how these funds compare to other index funds.

July 10: Whazzup Nellis? Welcome Program for Spouses: From 9 a.m. to noon at the Airman & Family Readiness Center there will be a variety of folks to welcome you to your new home and provide information about the services and programs available. To register, call (702) 652-3327.

July 10: FREE Deployed and Remote Family Dinner at Crosswinds Dining Facility: From 5:30 to 7 p.m. Meet and socialize with other deployed and remote families and get a night off from cooking! Call the Airman & Family Readiness Center at (702) 652-3327 to register.

July 11: Walk-In GI Bill Briefing: Open to military members, spouses and dependents. No appointment necessary. Learn the basics of the Montgomery GI Bill, Post 9/11 GI Bill, conversions and transfers of benefits. For more information, call the Education Office at (702) 652-5280/5282.

July 13: Black Canyon Kayak Trip with Outdoor Recreation: Kayak/Canoe from below Hoover Dam to Willow beach. Enjoy Sauna Cave, Boy Scout Canyon, Arizona Hot Springs and more. Bring Photo I.D. and at least two quarts of water. Weight limits: tandem kayak =500 pounds, canoe =1,000 pounds. Depart 6:15 a.m. and return 5:30 p.m. The Cost is $50 and includes transportation, guides, equipment, launch fees and lunch.

July 20: Sunset Barbecue Horseback Ride: As the afternoon heat fades into cooler evening temperatures, relax in the saddle as your horse follows the winding trail through the narrows. Enjoy the sunset against the colorful Spring Mountains and Red Rock Canyon. Anticipate a nice tasty meal under the evening sky. Adventure departs at 5 p.m. from Outdoor Recreation and returns at approximately 9:30 p.m.. Cost is $140 per person. Children 12 and below, active duty E-4 and below are $135 per person.

July 26: North Rim Grand Canyon Camp Out: Beat the Vegas heat in the cooler environment of the North Rim Grand Canyon. Visit the historic Grand Canyon Lodge and absorb the scenic views of the Canyon from several vantage points. A general store and coin operated hot showers are available just outside the campground. Adventure departs Friday at 9 a.m. from Outdoor Recreation and returns at approximately 4:30 p.m., Sunday. Cost of $90 includes transportation, food in campground and all camping equipment.

July 27: 27-Hole Partnership: Sign up today for this year’s 27-Hole Partnership. 7:30 a.m. Shot-Gun Formats: Eagle -1 Best Ball, Falcon Combined Score, Eagle Scramble; Make your own teams, Players will be awarded 80 percent handicap, Flights will be made based on combined handicaps. Entry fee is $65 for non-golf course members, $ 55 for golf course members, includes Green Fee, Cart Fee, Range Balls, Food and Prizes.
