Ask the Doc

doctor
Q. My daughter is 20 years old and no longer attends college. Does she lose her TRICARE eligibility since she is no longer a full-time student?

A. No. Although your daughter is no longer attending school, she continues to be TRICARE eligible until her 21st birthday. In addition, after her 21st birthday, she may be eligible for the TRICARE Young Adult program. TYA allows qualified adult dependents to purchase TRICARE coverage after eligibility for regular TRICARE coverage ends.
You may qualify to purchase TYA if you are:
• An unmarried, adult child of an eligible sponsor.

Eligible sponsors include:
• Active duty service members
• Retired service members
• Activated Guard and Reserve members
• Non-activated Guard and Reserve members using TRICARE Reserve Select
• Retired Guard and Reserve members using TRICARE Retired Reserve
• At least age 21 but not yet 26 years old
• If you are enrolled in a full course of study at an approved institution of higher learning and your sponsor provides more than 50 percent of your financial support, your eligibility may not begin until age 23 or upon graduation, whichever comes first
• Not eligible to enroll in an employer-sponsored health plan based on your own employment
• Not otherwise eligible for TRICARE coverage

Monthly Premiums
To participate, you must pay monthly premiums. TYA premium rates are established annually on a calendar year basis.
The 2013 monthly premium amounts for each option are:
• Prime option: $176 per month
• Standard option: $152 per month
