Ask the Doc

doctor

Q. I have Medicare and TRICARE. Can I see a doctor or supplier who doesn’t provide services through Medicare?

A. Yes, you can see a doctor or supplier but your out-of-pocket expenses are higher. If you sign a private contract with your doctor or supplier Medicare won’t pay any amount for the services you get from this doctor or supplier, even if it’s a Medicare-covered service. Secondly, TRICARE will process the claim and will only pay the amount it would have paid if Medicare processed the claim which is normally 20 percent of the TRICARE-allowable charge. Lastly, you’re responsible for the remainder of the TRICARE-allowable charge.
