Q. What is hospice care and does TRICARE cover it?

A: Hospice is patient or family centered care for terminally ill patients who have six or less months to live if their illness runs its full and normal course. Hospice focuses on pain control, home care, comfort, and self-respect. TRICARE covers a number of services offered under the hospice benefit, to include basic health care services, hospice physician providers, nursing care, social services, counseling, inpatient respite cases, inpatient care, therapy, medical supplies and home health and personal custodial care. There are no limits on custodial care and personal comfort items under hospice care rules. TRICARE pays the full cost of covered hospice care services except for small cost-share amounts that may be collected by the hospice for such things as drugs and the inpatient respite care. Check with your TRICARE contractor for details.
