Tech. Sgt. Joanna Hale, 57th Adversary Tactics Support Squadron aircrew flight equipment craftsman, and Airman 1st Class Christopher Laguna, 99th Medical Support Squadron health services management journeyman, organize cookies and candy during the Cookie Drive Dec. 11, 2012, at Nellis Air Force
Base, Nev. Cookies were collected, assorted and placed in bags for distribution during the event.

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. — Nellis AFB and local community partners are joining together to donate cookies to more than 1,000 Airmen living in the dormitories for this year’s annual Airman Cookie Drive set for Dec. 9.

This year’s Airman Cookie Drive continues the tradition of donating cookies to single Airmen living in the dormitories on Nellis and Creech AFBs in an effort to bring the presence of family to Airmen during the holidays.

“The purpose of the cookie drive is to bring a little home touch to Airmen in the dorms,” said Melody Ellis, wife of Chief Master Sgt. Robert Ellis, U.S. Air Force Warfare Center command chief. “The senior spouses at Nellis and Creech come together with the community just to let the Airmen know we are thinking about them during this time.”

Master Sgt. Kara Barcomb, 757th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron first sergeant, helped put together baskets of cookies and handed them out to Airmen during the annual Cookie Drive in 2012 and hopes this year can be equally effective.

“Last year’s Cookie Drive was an overwhelming success,” Barcomb said. “We had so many volunteers that we were literally stepping over each other. It is our hope that our Airmen know that they are appreciated and thought of during this time of the year, and we hope that the annual Cookie Drive provides that sense.”

Planning for the event began in October and leads into December where the cookies are handed out to ensure every Airmen is taken care of.

“It can be a lonely time, and it’s an emotional time of the year,” Ellis said. “Just being able to give back to our Airmen who are here and look forward to getting that package of cookies every year is just great.”

Donations can be dropped off at the Nellis AFB Chapel on Dec. 9 from 6 to 9 a.m. For more information about the cookie drive, contact nelliscookiedrive@gmail.com.
