Fourteen U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to Nellis and Creech Air Force Bases, Nev., take the Oath of Enlistment during a reenlistment ceremony Dec. 4 inside the base theater at Nellis AFB. In an effort to take care of Airmen that qualify for a Selective Reenlistment Bonus incentive, the 99th Force Support Squadron made arrangements for Airmen to reenlist in a mass formation before the bonuses expired.

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. — The U.S. Air Force has been dealing with budget cuts, furloughs and sequestration, and to reduce spending, the Air Force has suspended the Selective Reenlistment Program for service members in 80 percent of critically manned career fields effective immediately.

In an effort to take care of Airmen that qualify for the incentive, the 99th Force Support Squadron has made arrangements for Airmen who would be affected by the change.

“On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, [the Air Force Personnel Center] released a message on removing 47 [Air Force Specialty Codes] off of the Selective Reenlistment Bonus [list],” said Master Sgt. Rachel Crittle, 99th FSS career development superintendent. “[More than] 160 service members were affected at Nellis and Creech AFBs.

“What we did was coordinate a mass reenlistment ceremony here to ensure our Airmen keep their bonuses.”

Col. Charles Perham, 99th Mission Support Group commander, emphasized the importance of critically manned career fields.

“We had 46 different career fields eligible for reenlistment bonuses. Now we’re going to have 10.”

Perham said, “The fact that your career fields were critical enough, the fact that your bonus runs out today, doesn’t matter. Your career fields are critical, and we need you in our Air Force.”

Reenlistments that occurred on or after Dec. 5 will be based off of the newly released SRB list.
