USAJOBS urges job seekers to ensure application is complete

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas — So you have just found your dream job — now what? Do you know how to complete the application?

In 2010, the Air Force transitioned all fill actions to a resume-based system; but, the Total Force Service Center continues to receive calls from applicants unsure of how to complete the application process via USAJOBS, said Nancy Tackett a supervisory human resources specialist with the Air Force Personnel Center.

Now job announcements are advertised on USAJOBS.gov, and all applicants must submit a resume. Once a job announcement closes, hiring managers receive copies of candidates’ resumes instead of their Air Force employee career briefs.

Job seekers who need help creating a resume will find helpful tips on the Air Force Civilian Careers and USAJOBS websites. Additionally, Airman and Family Readiness Centers can assist with resume development through one-on-one consultations and resume writing workshops.

“Civilian employees should familiarize themselves with the USAJOBS site and application process, even if they don’t plan to apply for a vacancy right away,” Tackett advised. “Employees should at least create an account and upload or create a resume so when they do want to submit an application their account will already be established.”

To get started, go to www.usajobs.gov, create an account and upload verification documents such as DD-214s, Standard Form 15s, transcripts or other useful employment documents. The documents are retained within the applicant’s profile awaiting attachment to job applications.

Saved documents are not automatically attached to the job application. Applicants must attach the specific documents required for each application based on instructions in the ‘How to Apply’ section of the job announcement.

To ensure potential applicants understand the USAJOBS application process, Tackett provides the following step-by-step information on:

1. To begin the application process, select the ‘Apply Online’ button and create, select or upload a resume and supporting documents.

2. Next select the ‘Apply for This Position Now’ to go to the USA Staffing Application Manager for completion of the application questionnaire process.

* Application manager, the module connected to the human resources tool used for recruitment and referral, creates an account based on information in the applicant’s profile in USAJOBS. Applicants can check application status by logging in and selecting ‘Application Status’ from the sidebar menu.

* Application status is only available if a resume was submitted through USAJOBS using the ‘Apply Online’ button. Status is not available for applications posted directly to an agency’s website or through any other job application method outside of the USAJOBS account.

3. Once the questionnaire is complete applicants will be prompted to verify their responses and ensure required documents are attached before submitting a package.

4. Next the screen will display submission confirmation and applicants will receive email confirmation at the email address they listed when signing up for USAJOBS.

* If an applicant logs into the system and is not allowed to connect to the application manager to verify submission, then the application process was never completed.

“It is the applicants’ responsibility to ensure they have successfully completed the entire application process and submitted all required documents with the application questionnaire,” Tackett added. “Even if you don’t want to apply for a job right now, it’s better to be prepared in case your dream job is announced.”
