Community Happenings – March 14, 2014

Bazaar: The Nellis Area Spouses’ Club will be hosting a bazaar 5-8 p.m., March 25 in the Thunderbirds Hangar. More than 30 local spouses are scheduled to be selling goodies and gifts. Other events will include photos with the Thunderbirds, food trucks and music.

Spring Fling and Family Day: March 29, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Freedom Park. Free lunch will be provided. Sports include kickball, three-on-three basketball, volleyball and bouncy house. Car show and big beats competition with first place teams winning up to $200 in prizes.

Job Fair: April 17, 11 a.m.-noon in the airman and family readiness center. Representatives from a variety of local and out-of-state businesses will be on hand. Bring your resume and other necessary paperwork. For more information, call (702) 652-3327.

EFMP Parent Support Group: Share common experiences unique to special needs families and learn about new information and resources. We meet the third Wednesday of every month at the Airman and Family Readiness Center.

Nellis Company Grade Officer’s Council: The Nellis CGOC provides a source of social and professional development for all company grade officers at Nellis. Volunteer and leadership opportunities are available as well as the chance to network with other like-minded professionals at Nellis. Monthly meetings are held the last Thursday of every month at Robin’s Roost in the Club from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. For more information, call (702) 652-9623.

Deployed Spouses supporting Deployed Spouses: Stay strong during deployments and meet with other deployed spouses. Share ideas, learn coping skills, socialize and more. Meetings are held at the Airman and Family Readiness Center from 11 a.m. to noon the first and third Monday of each month. For more information, call (702) 652-3327.

The legal office expands appointment availability: The legal office has expanded its appointment availability to better serve you. Appointments are now available 9-11 a.m., and 1-3 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 9-11 a.m., Friday. Due to the expanded appointment availability, walk-in hours are no longer available. Air University temporarily suspended: The Air University has temporarily suspended all active duty enrollments in the NCO Academy Distance Learning Academy Distance Learning Course. Active cuty students who were enrolled in the course have been dis-enrolled. The course is open only to reserve and guard members at this time.

Work out group: Work out with the AM-Extreme Group at the Warrior Fitness Center. Classes include: Insanity and Ab Ripper, 5:15-6:20 a.m., Mondays and Fridays in the Cardio Room; P90X, 5:15-6:20 a.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Cardio Room; and YogaX, 4:40-6:20 a.m., Wednesdays at Racquetball Court three. Transition Assistance Program: The airman and family readiness center has scheduled Transition Assistance Program Workshops for 2014. The workshop is designed to teach students how they can apply their military-acquired skills in the civilian sector and prepare for their next career.

Classes run 8 a.m.-4 p.m., and are scheduled for:

  • March 24 to 27
  • April 7 to 10 and 21 to 24
  • May 5 to 8, 12 to 15 and 19 to 22
  • June 2 to 5, 16 to 19, and Jun 30 to Jul 3
  • July 14 to 17 and 28 to 31
  • Aug. 4 to 7, 18 to 21, and 25 to 28
  • Sept. 8 to 11 and 22 to 25
  • Oct. 6 to 9 and 20 to 23
  • Nov. 3 to 6 and 17 to 20
  • Dec. 1 to 4 and 15 to 18

Movin’ on Up and Out of the Dorm: March 19, 10-11 a.m. at the airman and family readiness center. Determine what you have and what you need to set up housekeeping and figure what it will actually cost you to live off-base besides rent. Project a budget and learn how to start your BAH. March 14: St. Patrick’s Day & Women’s History Month 5K Run: March 14, 7 a.m. at the Warrior Fitness Center.

March 15: UFC 171 (Hendricks vs. Lawler): March 15 at the Time Out Sports Lounge. Doors open at 1 p.m., fight starts at 7 p.m. and is free for members. There will be a special fight menu and beverage bar specials available. For more information, call (702) 652-9733.

March 15: Outdoor Recreation’s Over the Hump to the Pahrump Wineries Trip: March 15, departs Nellis at 9 a.m., returns at approximately 5:30 p.m. This adventure visits two wineries – the Pahrump Valley Winery and the Sanders Family Winery. At the tasting table you will sample awards-winning wines and snacks on cheese and crackers. At the gift shop you may purchase souvenirs of this novel experience. A lunch stop a local restaurant between two wineries is optional. Space is limited, so call outdoor recreation at (702) 652-2514 to reserve your spot. This trip is PLAYpass eligible.

March 19: Nevada PEP hosts a “Skills for Effective Parent Advocacy” class: March 19, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the airman and family readiness center. Participants will learn the importance of advocacy and effective strategies to help children with dis-abilities. Communication techniques will help you feel confident advocating for children. March 22: Demo Days at the Sunrise Vista Golf Course: March 22, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Fre to attend and to try out the latest in golf equipment. March 22: Land Sailing: March 22. Join outdoor recreation for a day of land sailing on a dry lake bed near Primm, Nev. The land sailing craft are easy to set up and sail, even for those with no prior experience. Safety helmets will be provide or you may bring your own. You may bring a lunch or be prepared to purchase food at a stop along the way. The adventure departs Nellis at 11 a.m. and returns at approximately 6 p.m. To reserve your spot, call (702) 652-2514. This trip is PLAYpass eligible.

March 26: Mandated Personal Finance Class for First Duty Station Officers: March 26, 8-9 a.m. at the airman and family readiness center. This class is mandatory for all first duty station officers and is required within 90 days of arrival. To register, call (702) 652-3327.

March 28: Thrift Savings Plan: March 28, noon-1 p.m., at the airman and family readiness center. Join us for a ‘lunch and learn’ series on understanding the TSP. Medical center closure: Due to a mandatory base-wide exercise March 25, the Mike O’Callaghan Federal Medical Center will be closed for normal operations with the exception of the Emergency Room and inpatient services. All outpatient clinics, including the main pharmacy, satellite pharmacy, laboratory and radiology will be closed for normal operation in support of the exercise.
