Volunteers rejuvenate environmental growth

Gen. Billy McCoy, commander of what was then the U.S. Air Force Fighter Weapons Center, established a separate environmental office at Nellis Air Force Base with one goal in mind: “mission accomplishment through environmental excellence.”

The Maj. Gen. Billy McCoy Environmental Grove is located on Ellsworth Avenue near the Nellis Air Force Base north gate and offers walking paths, picnic tables and barbecue pits for base members’ enjoyment. During the Earth Day cleanup volunteers pruned bushes, picked up fallen leaves and branches.

A Cholla cactus also known as “jumping cactus” is in full bloom at the Maj. Gen. Billy McCoy Environmental Grove April 24 at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. The environmental grove has over a hundred desert trees and plants and serves as a reminder that Earth Day is more than a one-day event or annual environmental wake-up call.
