Weekly events

Monday: Ready, Set Grow Parent Group, 10 a.m. at the youth center.

Tuesday: Artistic Expression, 5:30 p.m. at the youth center.

Wednesday: Grill your own steak, 5 p.m. at The Club.

Thursday: Right Start Newcomers Orientation, 8:30 a.m., at The Desert Oasis.

EFMP Parent Support Group: Share common experiences unique to special needs families and learn about new information and resources. We meet the third Wednesday of every month at the Airman and Family Readiness Center.

Nellis Company Grade Officer’s Council: The Nellis CGOC provides a source of social and professional development for all company grade officers at Nellis. Volunteer and leadership opportunities are available as well as the chance to network with other like-minded professionals at Nellis. Monthly meetings are held the last Thursday of every month at Robin’s Roost in the Club from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. For more information, call (702) 652-9623.

Deployed Spouses supporting Deployed Spouses: Stay strong during deployments and meet with other deployed spouses. Share ideas, learn coping skills, socialize and more. Meetings are held at the Airman and Family Readiness Center from 11 a.m. to noon the first and third Monday of each month. For more information, call (702) 652-3327.

The legal office expands appointment availability: The legal office has expanded its appointment availability to better serve you. Appointments are now available 9-11 a.m., and 1-3 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 9-11 a.m., Friday. Due to the expanded appointment availability, walk-in hours are no longer available. To book an appointment, call the legal assistance phone line at (702) 652-7531.

Air University temporarily suspended: The Air University has temporarily suspended all active duty enrollments in the NCO Academy Distance Learning Academy Distance Learning Course. Active cuty students who were enrolled in the course have been dis-enrolled. The course is open only to reserve and guard members at this time.

Work out group: Work out with the AM-Extreme Group at the Warrior Fitness Center. Classes include: Insanity and Ab Ripper, 5:15 to 6:20 a.m., Mondays and Fridays in the Cardio Room; P90X, 5:15 to 6:20 a.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Cardio Room; and YogaX, 4:40 to 6:20 a.m., Wednesdays at Racquetball Court three. Resume writing: The second Thursday of each month, 9 to 11 a.m. at the airman and family readiness center. Topics include networking, cover letters, announcements, resumes and marketing yourself. For more information, call (702) 652-3327.

Joint Forces Staff College Course Registration: The Joint Forces Staff College course registrations have resumed, but enrollments per class are now limited and registrations must be accomplished three to four weeks prior to actual CSDs. Registrations may also need to be accomplished from a personal or public computer because some of the .mil networks block the form from loading properly.

Transition Assistance Program: The airman and family readiness center has scheduled Transition Assistance Program Workshops for 2014. The workshop is designed to teach students how they can apply their military-acquired skills in the civilian sector and prepare for their next career. Classes run 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and are scheduled for:

  • May 12 to 15 and 19 to 22
  • June 2 to 5, 16 to 19, and June 30 to July 3
  • July 14 to 17 and 28 to 31
  • Aug. 4 to 7, 18 to 21, and 25 to 28
  • Sept. 8 to 11 and 22 to 25
  • Oct. 6 to 9 and 20 to 23
  • Nov. 3 to 6 and 17 to 20
  • Dec. 1 to 4 and 15 to 18

May 9: Medical Center closure: Due to a Medical Group training and an official function May 9, the Mike O’Callaghan Federal Medical Center will be closed for normal operations with the exception of the emergency room and inpatient services. All outpatient clinics, including the main pharmacy, satellite pharmacy, laboratory and radiology will be closed for normal operation in support of the exercise. We are sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause.

May 9: Commencement Ceremony: The Community college of the Air Force and the graduating class of spring 2014 are hosting a commencement ceremony 3 p.m., May 9 at the Nellis Air Force Base Club. May 16-18: Marriage Care Couples Retreat: The three-day retreat is taking place at Lake Las Vegas Resort and Spa. Designed to renew and revitalize strained military marriages. Limited space is available. To register, call the Nellis Air Force Base Chapel at (702) 652-2950.

May 17: Golf Tournament: The Nevada Healthcare Forum 3rd Annual Golf Tournament will be held May 17 at the Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort – Snow Mountain. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the shotgun start at 9 a.m. The event is held to support and honor wounded troops and their families in the Las Vegas area.
