Expert to discuss how to serve veterans attending college

Marine Corps veteran and university veterans services director Dr. Marshall Thomas will discuss how to serve veterans attending college during a presentation 6-8 p.m., April 10 in the Antelope Valley College Board Room, SSV 151.

The presentation will offer a glimpse into the culture that helps form student veterans and discusses some of the challenges veterans face in their pursuit of a degree.

An estimated 60,000 military personnel from California are expected to leave the service within the next two years, with many of those expected to enroll for classes at community colleges, according to the state Department of Veterans Affairs. A number of veterans who served in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars have already left the service in recent years.

Thomas is director of Veterans Affairs Services at California State University, Long Beach. He developed the VET NET Ally program to educate college and university faculty, staff and administrators about student veterans. The program is designed to create welcoming campus environments and networks of allies to student veterans.
