President Barack Obama has nominated Frederick E. Vollrath to be assistant secretary of defense for readiness and force management.
Vollrath has been performing the position’s duties as principal deputy assistant secretary of defense for readiness and force management.
Before appointment to his current position in March, he had been president of Vollrath Consulting since 2006. From 1999 to 2006, he was corporate vice president of human resources for the Computer Sciences Corp.
After 35 years of military service, Vollrath retired as a lieutenant general in 1998 after two years as the Army’s deputy chief of staff for personnel. Before that, he served as the U.S. Army Europe deputy chief of staff for personnel in Heidelberg, Germany, as director of enlisted personnel management, and as commanding general for the Personnel Information Systems Command in Alexandria, Va.
Vollrath earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Miami and a master of arts degree from Central Michigan University.
