Navy jet makes emergency landing in San Diego

The Navy says a fighter jet training 100 miles off the San Diego coast has made an emergency landing.

U-T San Diego says the F/A-18 jet was training with the aircraft carrier Nimitz Nov. 6 when it was diverted. It landed safely at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego.

Navy Lt. Aaron Kakiel says he can’t comment on why the jet was diverted from the aircraft carrier. He says jets occasionally are prevented from returning to ship by a variety of problems, including mechanical problems.

Four years ago, a malfunctioning Marine F/A-18D crashed into a San Diego home after the pilot ejected. Four people died. A military investigation concluded that the pilot and ground crews didn’t follow emergency landing rules. AP

Emirates says it could seek new Boeing design

Dubai’s fast-growing airline Emirates says it would consider replacing some of its fleet of 175 Boeing 777s if the plane manufacturer designs a new version of the long-haul aircraft.

The statement Nov. 8 from Emirates President Tim Clark suggests a possible change of a major Boeing order by the Dubai-based carrier last year, when it signed a deal for 50 long-range 777-300 ER planes worth about $18 billion.

Clark says Emirates could consider changing its order if Boeing approves the next generation for the wide-body jet, which would likely not be available until 2019 at the earliest.

Emirates is locked in a close rivalry with other Gulf carries, Abu Dhabi-based Etihad and Qatar Airways, which are also seek to expand their fleets and routes. AP
