Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne to further develop high-concentration solar technology

CANOGA PARK, Calif. – The Environmental Security Technology Certification Program office of the Department of Defense has awarded Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne approximately $2.3 million to design and develop a 200-kilowatt high-concentration photovoltaic solar-power field on one acre at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.

The project is designed to demonstrate the high-performance and cost-effectiveness of HCPV technology for use at DOD installations, and ultimately large utilities and other industrial applications. Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne is a United Technologies Corp.

“We’re honored the Department of Defense has chosen Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne to further demonstrate this revolutionary technology, which provides clean energy and shines a light on greater energy independence and energy security,” said Neeta Patel, director, Energy Systems, Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne.

The solar field will include a dozen commercial-scale dual-axis HCPV units that track the sun from sunrise to sunset, feeding the electrical grid rather than relying on the local utility company. Each unit contains about 60 square meters of the HCPV modules, manufactured by Semprius, Inc., of Durham, N.C. The modules have a concentration ratio of 1,111 suns.

The project will also include a 200-kilowatt lithium-ion battery unit. As part of the contract award, Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne will perform field layout, systems integration, energy storage integration, and lead development and test of the HCPV/storage hardware, using cost and performance-optimization models already proven on the International Space Station and in smaller technology demonstrations at the University of Alabama-Huntsville.

Raytheon’s newest Standard Missile-3 takes out complex, separating short-range ballistic missile target

A Raytheon Standard Missile-3 Block IB fired from the USS Lake Erie destroyed a complex, separating short-range ballistic missile target with a sophisticated separating mock warhead. Despite stressing conditions designed to challenge the missile’s discrimination capabilities, the SM-3 successfully engaged the target using the sheer kinetic force of a massive collision in space. “Com...

Lockheed Martin’s second generation Aegis BMDS successfully intercepts ballistic missile target

Lockheed Martin’s second-generation Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense system achieved its fourth intercept since May 2012. The system successfully launched and guided a Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block IB missile to engage a sophisticated, separating short-range ballistic missile target. During the Missile Defense Agency test, U.S. Navy sailors aboard USS Lake Erie (CG-70) used the Aegis BMD...

F-35A successfully completes high angle of attack testing

The latest in a series of Lockheed Martin F-35A high angle of attack testing was recently completed at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.  The testing accomplished high AOA beyond both the positive and negative maximum command limits, including intentionally putting the aircraft out of control in several configurations. This included initially flying in the stealth...

Aerojet Rocket Motors contribute to third Standard Missile-3 Block IB intercept

Aerojet, a GenCorp company, announced May 16 that its propulsion systems successfully contributed to the third consecutive intercept test of Raytheon’s Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block IB. The SM-3 Block IB missile is part of the Missile Defense Agency’s Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense system. During Flight Test Mission-19, the sea-based missile intercepted and destroyed a separating...
