Navy awards General Dynamics $48 million for USS Toledo maintenance, modernization

The U.S. Navy has awarded General Dynamics Electric Boat a $47.7 million contract modification to perform routine maintenance and modernization work on the USS Toledo (SSN-769), a Los Angeles-class attack submarine. Electric Boat is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics.

Under the terms of the contract, Electric Boat will plan and perform a dry-docking selected restricted availability, which consists of maintenance work, alterations and modernization activities required to ensure the submarine is operating at full technical capacity. The work will take place at the Electric Boat shipyard in Groton and involve up to 300 employees. The work is scheduled for completion in September 2013.

The contract was initially award in May 2012 and has a potential value of $65 million if all options are exercised.

 

SAIC to provide concept design, development, fabrication services for SLiM project

Science Applications International Corporation announced Dec. 18 it was awarded a prime contract by the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research and Development Engineering Center to provide concept design, development, and fabrication services in support of the Self-Sustaining Living Module project. The single-award cost-plus fixed-fee contract has a six-month base period of performance, one one-year option, and a total contract value of approximately $1 million, if all options are exercised.

SLiM is a research study that will explore the application and synergistic integration of emerging habitation technologies into a conceptual technology design and demonstration. Under the contract, SAIC will provide concept design, development and fabrication services in support of the SAIC SLiM concept, which is a rigid-walled modular shelter system that includes solar energy collection and microgrid power management. SLiM will provide shelter and basic living amenities for small contingency bases. Under the six-month Phase I effort of the contract, SAIC will provide concept design drawings to the point demonstration units can be fabricated for a scale model of SLiM, and drawings for Phase II. Under the 12-month Phase II of the contract, SAIC will fabricate and assemble the units and provide a functional prototype of SLiM, including two cubes to demonstrate integrated energy and water management subsystems.

 

Elbit Systems to upgrade Israeli C-130H aircraft

Elbit Systems Ltd. has been awarded a contract by the Israel Ministry of Defense to upgrade the Israeli Air Force’s C-130H (Hercules) transport aircraft. The contract value is in an amount that is not material to Elbit Systems.

The modernization project will extend the operational life of the aircraft and significantly improve its operational capability, particularly in precision flying, low-level night flight and operations in adverse weather. The modernization will contribute to improved flight safety and reduce operating costs, by introducing cutting-edge digital systems to replace obsolete analog systems that have become unreliable and costly to maintain after four decades of intensive service with the IAF.

 

Boeing to continue technical support of U.S. Air Force space observation sites

Boeing will continue to provide engineering and scientific support for U.S. space situational awareness under an Innovative Research and Optical Site Support contract extension from the Air Force Research Laboratory.

Under the 18-month, $67 million extension, Boeing Directed Energy Systems will provide engineering support, conduct research, and maintain and enhance telescope and electro-optical systems at the Starfire Optical Range in New Mexico and the Maui Space Surveillance Complex in Hawaii. Boeing also is assisting with efforts to modernize major observatory systems at the Maui complex, and helping to return the systems from a period of testing and upgrades to full operational status.

“Boeing’s teams of highly skilled engineers and scientists at these sites have provided decades of world-class support services, as well as laser and adaptive optics research,” said David DeYoung, Boeing Laser Technical Services executive. “We are pleased to be able to work with our Air Force customer to continue to provide the innovative technologies and affordable services that are essential to advancing these programs.”

“The Optics Division looks forward to achieving our research goals as we work together with Boeing to move the mission forward,” said Col. Joseph Romero, chief, Optics Division, AFRL’s Directed Energy Directorate, Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M.

 

NASA awards flight projects building construction contract

NASA has selected SEMI USA Corporation of Houston to construct the Flight Projects Building at the agency’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

This firm-fixed-price contract is valued at approximately $31 million, with options for about $1 million worth of additional work. The period of performance for all work is 18 months from issuance of the Notice to Proceed on or about Jan. 31, 2013.

The Flight Projects Building will contain 120,000 square feet of office space distributed on four floors. The steel-frame, clear-span structure will have glass and terracotta rain-screen panel walls with sun-shading elements. The building also will have interior demountable and fixed walls. Associated work includes spread-mat foundation, new and upgraded roadways, parking, traffic signals, perimeter site access fencing, site lighting, new and upgraded utilities, erosion and sediment control, storm water management, and landscaping. This new construction is designed to achieve a minimum of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design 2009 V3 silver certification.
