Three new crew members for the International Space Station have launched from Kazakhstan. The Soyuz rocket carrying Fyodor Yurchikhin, Karen Nyberg and Luca Parmitano lifted away from the Baikonur Cosmodrome at 2:31 a.m., local time, May 29.

Should the U.S. Army buy a hybrid tank?

Next year, the U.S. Army is expected to choose a larger tank to replace its Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle, which has been in service since 1981. If the army accepts one contractor’s proposal, its armored brigades could be relying heavily on a tank with a hybrid engine for several decades.

Syria: Russia to send anti-aircraft missiles to stop Western ‘hotheads’

Moscow said it was being forced to send the S-300 system to Syria’s president to prevent Western “hotheads” from intervening in the country’s civil war.

Chinese hackers access major weapons systems: Washington Post

Chinese hackers have gained access to designs of more than two dozen major U.S. weapons systems, a U.S. report said on Monday, as Australian media said Chinese hackers had stolen the blueprints for Australia’s new spy headquarters.

This Memorial Day is punctuated by one other scandal in the Obama administration. The inability of the Department of Veterans Affairs to process disability and related claims of our nation’s veterans in a timely manner is a shameful situation that may well add not only to anxiety among veterans, but even to the number of deaths of those who served their nation. About 600,000 claims are backlogged — pending, in other words — for more than 125 days.

Protecting the command structure instead of the victims

’Tis the season for scandals — real and manufactured — in Washington. But if our elected officials are searching for a real scandal, maybe they should start with the officer leading the Air Force’s anti-sexual assault initiative who was charged with sexual battery this month. Or the sergeant in Texas who allegedly forced a subordinate into prostitution. Or the 26,000 sexual assaults that happened in our military last year alone.
