DOD announces research equipment awards

The Department of Defense June 3 announced awards to 140 university researchers at 77 academic institutions to support the purchase of research instrumentation and equipment.

The awards total $38.7 million and are being made under the Defense University Research Instrumentation Program.

The Defense University Research Instrumentation Program supports the purchase of state of the art equipment that augments current infrastructure or develops new university capabilities to perform cutting edge defense research.

The awards announced today are the result of a merit competition and will be made by the Army Research Office and Office of Naval Research. The Air Force Office of Scientific Research awards will be announced at a later date.

The Defense University Research Instrumentation Program is highly competitive. The Army Research Office and Office of Naval Research solicited proposals from university investigators conducting science and engineering research of importance to DOD. This includes research that underpins advances in surface chemistry and physics, computing and networks, electronics and electro optics, neuroscience, fluid dynamics, robotics and autonomous systems, and ocean, environmental, biological science and engineering.

In response to the requests, the Army Research Office and Office of Naval Research collectively received more than 500 proposals requesting $188 million in support for research equipment. The most technically meritorious proposals were selected by DOD research officesí scientific and management staff.

The Defense University Research Instrumentation Program awards will range from $50,000 to $1.1 million, and average approximately $277,000.† All awards are subject to the successful completion of negotiations between DOD research offices and the academic institutions.
