Northrop Grumman awards two San Gabriel Valley area students $10,000 engineering scholarships

AZUSA, Calif. – Northrop Grumman announced June 25 two winners of its annual Engineering Scholars program for graduating San Gabriel Valley-area high school seniors planning to pursue a career in engineering, computer science, physics or math. Each student will receive $10,000 over four years.

“Northrop Grumman is honored to sponsor this scholarship competition that enables the local community’s best-qualified math and science students to pursue an engineering education,” said Stephen J. Toner, vice president of the Military and Civil Space business unit at Northrop Grumman’s Electronic Systems sector. “These talented students are our future and it is a privilege to support them.”

Lucas James Del Toro from Bonita High School in La Verne and Chandler W. Woo from Polytechnic School in Pasadena each received the merit-based scholarship of $10,000 ñ payable in $2,500 installments over four years ñ during an awards reception and dinner hosted by Northrop Grumman in Monrovia on May 28.

The Northrop Grumman Engineering Scholars program is aimed at supporting promising high school seniors who intend to pursue a career in an engineering-related field. Candidates must plan to attend an accredited college or university school of engineering as a full-time student in an approved engineering program. The funds can be used for tuition, books, room and board, and lab fees.

A committee of Northrop Grumman employees selected the Engineering Scholars winners. To be eligible, each scholarship applicant had to be a resident of the San Gabriel Valley area and a graduating senior this spring from a public or accredited private high school in the area. Applicants also had to have a minimum composite SAT score of 1,700 or ACT score of 27 and a minimum GPA of 3.5. Recipients of any other Northrop Grumman-sponsored scholarship were not eligible. The committee also took into consideration work experience, community involvement and extracurricular activities.

Northrop Grumman is a significant financial and in-kind contributor to educational outreach programs aimed at encouraging young people to consider engineering and science-related career fields. The Electronic Systems sector supports multiple High School Involvement Partnership programs to excite student interest in science, technology, engineering and math.
