Funding schemes in Congress could ground drones; FAA pressured over privacy

The lagging federal effort to fully integrate drones into U.S. airspace is in danger of falling even further behind schedule. A funding bill now before the Senate essentially would stop the process in its tracks by prohibiting the Federal Aviation Administration from moving forward until it completes a detailed report on drones’ potential privacy impact.

Learjet spy planes buoy Bombardier in defense sales bid

Bombardier Inc. built planes such as the Challenger 605 and Learjet 70 to transport company executives. Now it’s overhauling them to monitor terrorists, hunt for submarines and find sailors lost at sea.

Boeing asks for beacon checks on up to 1,200 jets 

Boeing has asked airlines to inspect up to 1,200 aircraft across their fleets to gather data on Honeywell emergency beacons that have come under scrutiny following a fire on a parked 787 Dreamliner two weeks ago.

A decorated Korean War veteran from Massachusetts left North Korea July 29 without fulfilling his mission: to travel to the Chosin Reservoir battleground where he was hoping to locate the remains of a friend who was the Navy’s first black aviator.

Biden says United States to push China for South China Sea code

Vice President Joe Biden said the U.S. is pushing China to negotiate quickly with Southeast Asian nations on a code of conduct for the South China Sea, an area that’s a “major, major, major highway of commerce.”

Sending our daughters to war

This summer, President Obama will announce detailed plans for incorporating women into the U.S. armed forces’ ground combat units. Unlike the redefinition of marriage, this alteration of one of the basic norms of civilization has passed strangely unremarked. Yet it defies both science and millennia of human experience, and it ought to prompt some real national soul searching about the roles of the sexes in national security.
