Edwards Civ Mil Support Group receives gift

Raphael Jaffe

The Sept. 13 meeting of the Edwards Civ-Military Support Group directors heard news of a generous contribution to its charitable work for the military stationed at Edwards Air Force Base.

The directors approved a budget item for the upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays; action was announced on gifts to the Higher Grounds Internet CafÈ for Air Force dorm dwellers; results of the election for officers and directors were announced; and tentative plans to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the group were discussed.

Lockheed Martin made a generous contribution of $5,000 to the Civ-Mil special account which funds the groupís charitable programs to ìserve those who serve.î The contribution is part of Lockheed Martinís philanthropic activities in support of military members. Lockheed is also active in hiring veterans, assisting military spouses in employment, and a host of similar support to the armed forces.

The directors approved $7,500 to be used for activities related to Thanksgiving and Christmas.

In cooperation in previous years with the First Sergeants Council, Civ-Mil has funded the Holiday Meals, the Angel Tree and Operation Warm Heart programs.

The Angel Tree is located at the Base Exchange and has name tags by age and sex of children of Air Force junior enlisted personnel who might not otherwise get Christmas gifts. Many Civ-Mil members contribute Angel Tree gifts individually. There is also Operation Warm Heart which gives gift certificates to about 200 personnel who are nominated by the First Sergeant Council. Individual members of Civ-Mil also donate funds for these programs.

Board President Danny Bazzell has met with the Dorm Dwellers Council and has worked up a list of desired gifts for the Higher Grounds Cafe, which is located in Dormitory 2423.

They are being procured and will shortly be donated. The list includes Keurig-type coffee makers and supplies, pool cue sticks, cue racks and darts. Civ-Mil will also provide a high speed wireless Internet hot spot. These are being funded by a previous allocation of up to $2,500.

Results of the election for next yearís officers and the new group of directors were announced by Bob Johnstone, the election chair.

Officers are unchanged with Bazzell as president, James Welling as vice president, Julie Swayze as secretary and George ìBudî Reams as treasurer.

The board of directors consists of 21 individuals who each serve for three years. Seven are elected each year. Those who will serve from 2014 to 2016 are Danny Bazzell, Mike Belzil, Art Furtado, Roger Hemme, Pan Patel, Aida OíConner and Reams.

The Installation Banquet for these officers will be Sept. 26, at Club Muroc on Edwards. Edwards command officers are expected to attend, and the community is invited.

Reservations should be made by calling (661) 945-1021 or emailing rsvp@eafbcivmil.com

The 25th anniversary of the Edwards Civ-Mil Support Group will be in 2014 and there are plans to have silver anniversary activities, starting in October 2013, and to present a Spring Gala, rather than the usual Spring Mixer.
