Northrop Grumman contributes $100,000 to Da Vinci Schools

REDONDO BEACH, Calif. ñ Northrop Grumman has reaffirmed its longstanding commitment to local education in Southern California by contributing $100,000 to the Da Vinci Schools.

The Da Vinci Schools, located on the same campus in the Wiseburn School District in Hawthorne, Calif., are public and tuition-free. The schools offer a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum based on project-based learning, a dynamic approach that allows students to relate classroom projects to real-world problems while working in groups to come up with meaningful solutions.

Art Lofton, sector vice president of Global Quality for Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems and a member of the Da Vinci Schools’ board of trustees, presented the gift at the school district’s Dec. 16 meeting.

“The Wiseburn School District and the Da Vinci Schools have established an education environment that is as innovative and unique as it is dedicated to future generations of learners and explorers,” said Lofton. “Northrop Grumman has demonstrated a deep and abiding commitment to science, technology, engineering and math education, and this contribution symbolizes our ongoing support and deep appreciation for all these educators achieve.”

Most of Northrop Grumman’s 19,000 Los Angeles County employees work in the South Bay area, and the company has supported the Da Vinci Schools since their 2009 founding. This support has included:

  • Funding the school’s Northrop Grumman Innovation Lab, where students manage projects in real-world format and progression;
  • Providing significant support of the schools’ STEM Education/Robotics Expansion program;
  • Supporting a unique program that enables students to graduate with Associate of Arts degrees to offset four years of college tuition; and
  • Establishing scholarships, grants and mentorship programs.
