NASA Dryden’s Facilities Support Center construction complete

Late afternoon clouds provide a dramatic highlight to NASA Dryden’s new Facilities Support Center. Desert landscaping around the 38,000-square-foot structure is intended to minimize water usage with drought-tolerant shrubbery.

Construction of the new Facilities Support Center at NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center has officially been declared complete.

Dryden employees were given a self-guided tour of the new building Jan. 15, and installation of furniture, information technology equipment and related items is now under way.

A formal dedication is tentatively planned after Dryden’s Facilities Engineering and Asset Management, Acquisitions and Finance departments and facilities maintenance support contractor staff move in, beginning in March.

Designed by the Development One architectural firm of Santa Ana, Calif., the new structure was built by Comfort and Hays Electric, Inc. of Long Beach, Calif., and its subcontractors.

NASA Dryden architect and Facilities Support Center project manager Gemma Flores outlines where various center organizations will be located in the new building to Dryden information technology security specialist Brent Mead during an open house Jan. 15.

Construction costs came to just under $12 million, with an additional $700,000 budgeted to furnish the 38,000-square-foot structure.

The structure is designed to meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) new construction platinum certification for environment and energy efficiency. Based on building energy consumption simulations, NASA Dryden facilities engineers forecast that energy consumption will be reduced about 36 percent over conventional construction.
