NASA Armstrong aircraft, exhibits featured at L.A. County Air Show

NASA’s high-altitude ER-2 aircraft No. 806 lifts off the runway at Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, Calif. NASA operates two ER-2s for airborne science research, electronic sensor research and development, satellite calibration and satellite data validation.

NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center will have a major presence at the inaugural Los Angeles County Air Show March 21 and 22 at the William J. Fox Airfield in Lancaster, Calif.

The air show on Friday and Saturday is being headlined by the Blue Angels, the U. S. Navy’s precision aerobatic flight demonstration team, which will be flying their spectacular tight-formation flight demonstration both afternoons.

The show will also feature numerous aerobatic flight demonstrations by civilian performers, flyovers of military and civilian aircraft and historic World War II and Korean War-era military aircraft from noon to 3 p.m. each day, followed by the Blue Angels performance in the team’s F/A-18 Hornets.

One of NASA Armstrong’s two Lockheed ER-2 high-altitude Earth Resources aircraft will be part of flight demonstrations both days, with the long-winged aircraft scheduled to make a low-level flyover about 12:30 p.m. The ER-2s, civilian versions of the Air Force’s U-2S reconnaissance aircraft but without military equipment, fly environmental science and satellite data verification missions from their base at the center’s Bldg. 703 adjacent to Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale.

Scores of exhibits and displays on the ground will profile the area’s past and present aerospace and technology heritage. Several of NASA Armstrong’s varied fleet of research and mission support aircraft will be on display, including a McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 similar to those flown by the Navy’s Blue Angels and a Beechcraft T-34C Mentor that is used for a variety of mission support roles.

A variety of exhibits ranging from a high-altitude pressure suit and an infrared camera to exhibits detailing NASA’s aeronautics and space technology research efforts will be at the NASA Armstrong tent toward the east end of the flight line. In addition, several of NASA Armstrong’s pilots and flight test engineers will be available to sign autographs during the two-day extravaganza. A full-size, inflatable model of the Mars Curiosity Rover will also be part of the NASA exhibit.

The NASA exhibits will be immediately adjacent to a large tent showcasing Science Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) activities in local industry and schools, including robotics demonstrations by the Lancaster High School Eagle Robotics team and other STEM-related hands-on activities and demonstrations.
