Earth Day Global “selfies” from NASA Armstrong

Thousands of social media users from scores of nations joined NASA in a worldwide celebration of Earth Day April 22 by participating in NASA’s “#GlobalSelfie” event. Employees of NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center were among those who joined in the fun.

The agency invited social media fans to step outside and take “selfie” photos wherever they are on Earth while holding a small sign that proclaimed “Hi, NASA! I’m on Earth Right now @ (location), #GlobalSelfie, Earth Day, Apr. 22, 2014.” Participants then posted their photos to Twitter, Instagram or Google+ using the hashtag #GlobalSelfie, or to the†#GlobalSelfie event page on Facebook or the #GlobalSelfie group on Flickr.

The Earth Day “Global Selfie” event drew attention to NASA’s involvement in Earth and environmental science around the world. 2014 is a big year for NASA Earth Science campaigns, as noted in the agency’s Earth Right Now web page.

With 17 Earth-observing missions orbiting our home planet right now ñ and five more scheduled to launch this year — NASA studies Earth’s atmosphere, land and oceans in all their complexity to gather critical data about our home planet. In addition, numerous Earth science missions are being conducted from specialized NASA research aircraft, a half-dozen of which are based at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center facilities at Edwards Air Force Base and Palmdale, Calif.

So what will become of the thousands of Earth Day “selfies” posted on social media sites?

NASA social media coordinators will use those pictures tagged #GlobalSelfie to create a mosaic image of Earth from the ground up while also fostering a collection of portraits of the people of Earth — a new “Blue Marble” built bit-by-bit with photos from participants around the world.

The Earth mosaic image itself and a video using the images will be put together and should be published on-line on NASA’s social media sites as well as its website, www.nasa.gov, sometime in May.
